How Your Home Affects Your Mental Health

Did you know that your surrounding environment, especially your home, plays a crucial role in both your physical and mental well-being? And, with remote work being the new normal for many, people are now spending more time in their homes than ever before.

You have most likely heard about restaurants carefully selecting the color palette and lighting to entice customers to feel comfortable and stay longer in their establishment. So, why not try this concept in your own home? From color, lighting and décor to something as simple as fresh flowers around the house, creating a space that increases your sense of well-being is easier than you think.

Declutter and clean your space.

Clutter tends to increase feelings of stress and anxiety and can even cause problems with focus. There’s no better time than now to do a little spring cleaning and detox your home of any unnecessary belongings that have accumulated over time. This will make an immediate difference in the feel of your home.

Take advantage of natural light.

Many studies have shown that light has an immense impact on your daily mood and overall sense of well-being. Opening blinds and drapes to allow for more natural light in your home can often initiate an immediate boost in your mood. You can also swap out darker window treatments for something more light and airy, especially during the spring and summer seasons.

Choose your color palette based on your mindset.

Color in a home can set the tone of an entire room. You may want to refresh your walls with a lighter color to enhance the natural light and create a more inviting, calming ambience. However, maybe you feel more drawn to darker shades that create a more cozy and intimate setting. Regardless of your personal preference, choose a color scheme for your space that suits you and brings a positive sense of well-being to your soul.

Introduce nature in your home.

Creating a warm and peaceful home environment can be as simple as keeping fresh flowers or plants around your home. Flowers can stimulate the senses, as well as add some color to any room. Keeping fresh flowers in your workspace can be especially soothing throughout the day.

Use your décor to display your favorite people and things.

Your home accents should reflect things that evoke a sense of internal happiness when you see them. Hanging photos of your family, friends, pets and destinations can serve as reminders of what keeps you going on even the toughest days.

Designate rooms for certain activities.

Another great way to manage your home environment is to designate specific rooms for certain moods and productivity levels. For example, you may want your living room to boost more color for entertaining guests, but you may also choose to create another space where you feel relaxed and safe alone with deeper tones and cozy furniture.

Although it may not be a cure all for everything, making your home a comforting and safe space can put you one step closer to a healthier and happier mindset.
