DIY Home Improvements on a Budget

As spring continues and summer approaches, it is the perfect time for do-it-yourself projects. Whether you are looking to give your entire home a makeover, or just spruce up a few areas, DIY is often the way to go in order to avoid breaking the bank. Although a DIY project can present its own set of challenges, nothing compares to the feeling of empowerment and satisfaction after a job well done.

Before beginning any project yourself, do your research! Make sure you have the proper tools and equipment needed for the project, and that you also know how to safely use them. It may be beneficial to read any available blogs or forums on your specific project to see what did and didn’t work for others who have tried it. No matter your level of DIY savvy, here are some ideas that are small in budget but huge in the impact on your home.

Give outdated cabinets a facelift.

Tackling kitchen or bathroom cabinets can seem like an overwhelming task, but it can be done both on a budget and pain free. Painting your cabinets is a simple solution to dramatically change the look of a kitchen or bathroom. You can also swap out old hardware on cabinets for a more updated look. Replacing one or two cabinet doors with glass-front doors is another popular trend that will upgrade the look of your kitchen and allow you to display your nicer glassware.

Need a new furniture piece?
Try restoring a piece from a yard sale or thrift store.

Restoring furniture is a very common and affordable alternative to purchasing new pieces. Carve out a few hours to spend a Saturday morning thrifting or visiting a local yard sale. You never know what hidden gems you might find. Some pieces that make great restoration projects include dressers, TV consoles, entry tables and more.

Add or update your backsplash.

In case you haven’t heard, peel-and-stick tile has become all the rage in the budget-friendly DIY world. You can purchase these self-adhesive tiles at most home improvement stores, and they typically offer a wide variety of color, pattern and size options to suit your preference. The best part about these, other than the price tag, is that they resemble real tile!

Use removable wallpaper to invigorate a plain room.

I bet you never thought the words “removable” and “wallpaper” could be used in the same sentence, but oh, how times have changed! Not only is wallpaper once again a common home décor essential, it has also become significantly easier to install and remove. A popular use of this trend is to create an accent wall with a bright or patterned paper to add something eye-catching and fun to a room.

Display your favorite photos or artwork with a DIY gallery wall.

Not sure what to do with all of the family photos you have saved? Choose your favorite photos and create a gallery wall to display your memories and add a new look to a room. Don’t skimp on the creativity with this one! You can mix and match frames of various styles and sizes for your wall, depending on how much space you have.

Revamp your front door.

Painting your front door is a great option to spruce up your home’s exterior. By choosing a bright, bold color, you can highlight your home’s entryway and be greeted with a fresh look each time you walk through the door. You can complement your new look with a fun door mat or seasonal wreath.

Get that backyard or patio in top shape for barbecue season.

As summer quickly approaches, great backyards are in high demand! A backyard or patio area offers an abundance of options for DIY projects that are simple, yet will yield a very high return, especially when you are hosting the neighborhood barbecue. Create a stunning and cozy outdoor space by hanging string lights above a sitting area. You can also add a wood-burning or gas fire pit to make your outdoor space the place to be on summer evenings.

Now that you’ve got some ideas, it’s time to roll up those sleeves and get to work. You will have your home looking better than ever this season in no time!
